Implement Recommendation 3 from the NACD 2026 Blue Ribbon Commission report: Define signals for monitoring and pressure-testing.

How to use this tool: Directors can use this guidance on generative AI (GenAI) tools to support their review and analysis of strategic assumptions, strategy execution signals, and emerging risks. This framework outlines illustrative GenAI use cases, key legal and oversight considerations, prompt-design principles, and an illustrative prompt that directors can adapt.

GenAI tools can help separate signal from noise in an environment characterized by accelerating change, expanding data sources, and increasing information overload. These tools may be particularly valuable for smaller public companies, private companies, and nonprofit organizations that may have fewer dedicated strategy, research, or analytics resources to support the board.

Despite potential benefits, board adoption of AI to support oversight remains in the early stages. A 2026 survey found that 7 percent of public company respondents reported using AI for strategy-related purposes and nearly half had not formally enabled or standardized AI use for board activities.
