Implement Recommendations 8 and 9 from the NACD 2026 Blue Ribbon Commission report: Calibrate the board's response to the issue and de-escalate heightened engagement.

How to use this tool: Directors and board leaders can use this spectrum with Tool 8, “Strategy Execution Oversight Diagnostic” after identifying an execution concern. Together, the tools help boards determine the appropriate level and type of engagement needed based on the significance and urgency of the issue and confidence in management’s response.

Board engagement can be an amorphous concept. For example, what does it mean in practice for a director to effectively engage with management without drifting too deeply into operational issues or blurring the line between board and management roles? Once execution challenges surface, directors need a practical way to decide how deeply to engage and which board mechanism is most appropriate for the specific issue.

Common miscalibrations include defaulting to an overly light response when the situation calls for heavier engagement or convening a full board session for a discussion that could have been addressed by an existing committee. It is important that board engagement hits at the right altitude.
