About The Event
At Board Effectiveness in Times of Rapid Change: Re-evaluating Structure and Capability, directors and executives gathered at Green Plains in Omaha for a candid discussion on how governance must evolve as disruption accelerates. Panelists Randy Wood (Lindsay), Paul Maass (Scoular), and Patrick Sweeney (Green Plains) shared practical perspectives drawn from both the boardroom and the CEO seat.
The conversation focused less on predicting external trends and more on how boards are looking inward — reassessing committee structures, refreshing skills matrices, and redefining oversight responsibilities to address AI adoption, supply chain volatility, regulatory pressure, and geopolitical uncertainty. Speakers emphasized that effective boards are moving beyond periodic refreshes toward continuous evaluation of capabilities and composition.
Attendees discussed balancing near-term risk oversight with long-term strategy, ensuring management support without losing independence, and equipping directors to navigate multiple simultaneous disruptions. A key takeaway: high-performing boards are intentionally designing governance structures that match the complexity of today’s environment rather than relying on legacy models.
The session concluded with active audience Q&A and peer exchange, reinforcing that board effectiveness today depends on agility, clarity of roles, and a proactive approach to board development.
