Sally Jewell has had a diverse and unusual career, beginning as an engineer in the energy industry, holding multiple roles in commercial banking, leading outdoor retailer Recreational Equipment Inc. (known as REI), serving in President Barack Obama’s cabinet as US secretary of the interior, leading The Nature Conservancy as interim CEO, and engaging with students through fellowship and faculty roles at Harvard University and the University of Washington. She has been an active board member over the course of her working life in environmental, educational, social service, civic, and business organizations that have shaped her journey and given her an appreciation of the inner workings of our democracy, economy, environment, and civil society.

Jewell is currently a director for Costco Wholesale Corp., Symetra Financial Corp., Green Diamond Resources Co., and The Nature Conservancy. In addition, she serves on several advisory boards and councils that focus on addressing solutions to climate change, effective government, Native youth empowerment, and public engagement. She has received multiple awards for her service, including the NACD Nonprofit Director of the Year Award, the National Audubon Society’s Rachel Carson Award, The Wilson Center’s Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship, the Puget Sound Business Journal’s Executive of the Year Award, and others. She is committed to supporting the changes needed to shape a sustainable and economically successful future for our shared planet and its diverse people.
