Associate Dean & Professor of Practice at SMU Cox School of Business

As a first-generation college student, Dr. Shane Goodwin is the Associate Dean and Professor of Practice at the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University. Dr. Goodwin also serves as an Adjunct Professor at SMU Law School. He has over 30 years of experience in corporate finance, M&A, and investment banking as a practitioner, board member, and professor. His research and teaching focus on M&A, corporate governance, and shareholder activism. Dr. Goodwin held positions at Columbia University and Harvard University and has nearly 25 years of experience in the financial sector with firms such as Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and
Wells Fargo Securities.

Dr. Goodwin is an expert witness on complex litigation issues regarding M&A, corporate governance, capital markets, private equity, and corporate finance matters. Dr. Goodwin serves on the Board and as Chair of the Audit Committees for the Principal Private Credit Fund, Principal Real Asset Fund, Harvard University Club of Dallas, the Investment Committee of the Dallas Regional Chamber, and the Advisory Boards of Crystal Clearwater Resources and Truist Financial Corporation (NYSE: TFC). Dr. Goodwin is a Board Leadership Fellow at the National Association of Corporate Directors.

Most recently, Dr. Goodwin was a Senior Fellow and Director at the Richman Center for Business, Law, and Public Policy at Columbia University, a research institute established by Columbia Business School and Columbia Law School. Dr. Goodwin was a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Law School Program on Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation and a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University. His research is focused on mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, and shareholder activism.

Dr. Goodwin has nearly 25 years of corporate finance, M&A, and investment banking experience at firms, including Goldman, Sachs & Co., Citigroup, Wells Fargo securities, and Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette. He has advised on over 250 M&A assignments totaling over $50 billion in transaction value and has executed over 100 public and private debt and equity investments totaling over $40 billion in value.

Dr. Goodwin was a three-year letterman in football, earning All-American Scholar and Student-Athlete of the Year awards, and was drafted by Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. He received the Outstanding Alumni Award and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at The University of Tulsa and the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame as a Canadian Junior Football League National Championship team member.
