John Murphy
Physician Executive and Governance Leader
John M. Murphy, M.D., is a physician executive and governance leader with more than three decades of experience in healthcare leadership, strategy, and board oversight. He most recently served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Nuvance Health, an integrated health system serving 1.5 million people across Connecticut and New York, with seven hospitals, more than 2,600 aligned physicians, and over 13,000 employees. During his tenure, Dr. Murphy led multiple complex mergers, including the formation of Western Connecticut Health Network and the creation of Nuvance Health, and guided the organization through its successful affiliation with Northwell Health in 2025. He retired as CEO at the end of 2025.
Prior to his executive leadership roles, Dr. Murphy served as Executive Vice President of Danbury Health Systems and spent nearly two decades in clinical practice as a neurologist. He expanded the neuroscience practice that included clinical research, neurophysiology, neuropsychology, and infusion services, while remaining active in graduate medical education and clinical research.
Dr. Murphy has extensive governance experience across healthcare, nonprofit, and financial institutions. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Union Savings Bank and previously chaired its Governance and Compensation Committees. He has also served on numerous boards, including the Connecticut Hospital Association—where he has chaired the board—Vizient New England (Chairman), and the Greater New York Hospital Association. In addition, he has participated in national policy and strategy initiatives through service on the American Hospital Association Committee on Health Strategy and Innovation.
A recognized leader in quality, safety, and system transformation, Dr. Murphy has received numerous honors, including recognition among the Top 100 Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Health Systems, the Benjamin Rush Award for Lifetime Achievement, and multiple community leadership awards.
Dr. Murphy earned his B.S., summa cum laude, from Fordham University and his M.D. from Rutgers Medical School. He completed his neurology residency and served as Chief Resident at UMDNJ–New Jersey Medical School. He is board certified in neurology and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Neurology.
He currently serves as Professor Emeritus in Neurology at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and remains active in governance, strategy, and leadership development.
