About The Event
NACD New Jersey hosted a comprehensive half-day intensive designed to sharpen board-readiness and broaden governance perspectives. Whether attendees were pursuing their first board seat or seeking to diversify an existing portfolio, the program delivered practical tools, candid insights, and meaningful peer connections to support board service in 2026 and beyond.
Session 1: The Journey—Reality vs. Theory
The program opened with an unfiltered discussion on board recruitment. Seasoned directors, nominating and governance chairs, and corporate secretaries offered a behind-the-scenes look at how boards identify, vet, and ultimately select new members. Attendees gained a clearer understanding of the competencies, experiences, and reputational signals that matter most—and how board composition is strategically shaped over time.
Session 2: The Director’s Toolkit—Beyond the Boardroom
Veteran advisors in legal, compensation, and audit addressed the importance of integrating external expertise into a strong governance framework. Participants explored best practices for leveraging outside counsel and advisors to elevate oversight, mitigate risk, and enhance board effectiveness through strategic collaboration.
Session 3: Being an Effective Director
The final session focused on the influence and protections required of modern directors. Attendees examined the art of strategic inquiry and the value of continuous professional development through NACD and industry networks. A forward-looking briefing on the 2026 proxy landscape provided insight into shareholder litigation trends, activist pressures, and compensation considerations. The program concluded with a practical discussion of D&O insurance, clarifying key policy terms and addressing emerging AI and cyber-related exposures.
