The Economy: Where It Stands and What’s the Outlook

Do you know where the economy is and where it is headed? The future of the economy, while always uncertain, faces many challenges in 2025. The US economy seems strong with solid GDP and declining inflation, but there are warning signs with small businesses facing headwinds, consumer savings declining, and the trajectory of the Fed’s path to neutral rates in question. This is against a backdrop of Trump’s return to office with plans for substantial tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada, lower tax rates, deportation of illegal immigrants, closing the borders, and more. How might these impact GDP and inflation? Further confusing the outlook is weakness in Europe and China, with Japan tightening and continuing geopolitical hotspots around the globe. What to make of all this?
