Before his appointment to the Senate in 2009 and election to a full six-year term in 2010, Michael served as Superintendent of Denver Public Schools, where he focused on improving student outcomes, addressing underperforming schools, and managing the district’s finances.

Prior to that role, Michael was Chief of Staff to then-Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, where he worked on budget planning and administrative initiatives aimed at improving city services. He lives in Denver with his wife and three daughters.
