Claire DeMatteis is a Delaware attorney who served as senior advisor to three Delaware Governors and as senior counsel to then-US Senator Joe Biden. DeMatteis was Delaware Department of Corrections Commissioner through 2021. In January 2022, she was confirmed to lead Delaware’s newly centralized Department of Human Resources. DeMatteis chaired the Delaware Commission for Women and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Delaware Women. She served as partner in a large law firm (2004–2016) and then as senior executive, general counsel, and chief compliance officer for two multibillion-dollar corporations. DeMatteis led Delaware’s Family Court Enhancement Project (2016). She is a former adjunct professor and trustee of the University of Delaware and a director of Nemours Children’s Health System. DeMatteis was awarded the “Order of the First State” (2025) and was inducted into the University of Delaware Alumni Wall of Fame (2023).
