
Susan Thronson
Marketing & Communications Chair
Susan Thronson is an experienced independent director with global expertise in digital, e-commerce, and marketing. As the former Chief Marketing Officer for Marriott International, she was responsible for integrated business strategies focused on customer acquisition and revenue generation across a diverse portfolio of brands and engagement platforms, including their industry-leading loyalty program.
Susan currently serves on the board of Trulieve, an industry-leading, vertically integrated cannabis company and multi-state operator. She was elected to the board in 2020 and serves as the Compensation and Human Resources Committee chair and an Audit Committee member. Trulieve is poised for accelerated growth and expansion through its hub strategy and is listed on the CSE under the symbol TRUL and trades on the OTCQX market under the symbol TCNNF.
Her previous board service includes Angie’s List (now Angi), where she joined shortly after its IPO in 2012. During her tenure, the company transitioned from a subscription-based to a freemium model and diversified its customer acquisition strategy, ultimately leading to a successful acquisition by IAC and HomeAdvisor. In 2015, Susan was appointed to the board of Sonic Drive-Ins, where she championed a business transformation built on an integrated customer engagement strategy and was a catalyst for proactive cybersecurity risk oversight. The company was acquired by Inspire Brands in 2018 at an all-time high share price.
Susan's board service is informed by 24 years of experience at Marriott International. She led the evolution of Marriott Rewards into a powerful direct-to-consumer engine, responsible for half of all rooms sold and over $12 billion in e-commerce bookings across 4,000 hotels in 70 countries. Susan is a digital trailblazer, having developed compelling customer experiences and influenced consumer behavior through various media channels. Her career at Marriott also included rising through regional operations and serving as a pioneering executive team member of its $5-billion international division.
Committed to strong board governance, Susan is a NACD Governance Fellow and has completed the Carnegie Mellon cybersecurity risk oversight certification and NACD’s inaugural digital transformation learning cohort. Additionally, she is a volunteer at PFLAG National, the largest families and allies organization seeking equality for LGBTQ+ people, and served on its National Board of Directors for 12 years, including as Board Chair during its 50th anniversary.
Susan holds a BA in journalism from the University of Nevada, Reno, and has been recognized as a distinguished alumna. She has also attended executive training at Harvard University, Northwestern University, and Costa Rica’s INCAE. As a Southern California resident, Susan lectured on global business leadership at the University of California, Irvine.
