What’s one thing you’re learning right now — professionally or personally?

I am trying to learn how to use AI in a productive manner.

In your view, what makes a truly effective board member?

Effective board members need to be good listeners first. Questions should seek understanding as a priority. Once understanding is established, effective board members use good interpersonal skills to provide input based on their experience, knowledge and judgement. Effective board members come to meetings well prepared, ready to engage and work to achieve consensus with the other board members.

Beach, mountains, city, or countryside — what’s your ideal getaway?

Countryside is my ideal get away. My wife and I have enjoyed trips to Galapagos Islands, New Zealand and looking forward to South Africa.

What’s a small daily habit that makes a big difference for you?

I enjoy when I can, taking daily walks in the country with my two dogs. While they are out chasing rabbits and squirrels that they never catch, my mind wanders away from the fast paced world that we live in today. I always return relaxed and ready for another day of business.

Turn the Ship Around by L. David Marquet.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?

You should enjoy what you are doing and if not seek something that is more rewarding.

In your experience, what differentiates great board chairs?

Great board chairs have the ability to get every board member engaged in a way that is productive and enjoyable.

If you had an extra free hour every day, how would you spend it?

If I had an extra free hour every day I would spend it having relaxed time with my wife.

What’s the most unforgettable trip or experience you’ve ever had?

As I mentioned above, being out in the countryside is my favorite activity. While at the Galapagos Islands, swimming among wild sea lions and having them interact with you playfully was one of my most unforgettable experiences.
