What is the last book, podcast, article, or show you watched that really stuck with you?

I like to read short articles that may impact me from a leadership perspective. Dr. Keith Dorsey, an NACD member, publishes frequent articles and one that resonated with me that was published earlier this year in the Harvard Business Review was titled “4 Strategies to Secure a Board Seat.” I thought it was so spot on regarding the strategies especially the importance of networking that I share this article when aspiring directors reach out to me.

Coffee or tea?

Definitely, tea!

If you could give yourself advice on your first day as a board member, what would it be?

Consider your responsibilities to be a strong voice as you are not only representing the shareholders of the company, but various stakeholders including employees, investors, customers, suppliers, etc.

What's the most memorable trip you've ever taken?

In October 2018, I had the opportunity to be a guest of United Airlines on its inaugural trip to celebrate the first direct flights from San Francisco to Tahiti! Although I had to Chair an Audit Committee meeting (the day of the flight) and a board meeting (when I arrived), I made the trip and participated in my meetings virtually. I then thoroughly enjoyed being in Tahiti! Many thanks to MYF, a fellow NACD member who was an executive with United at the time.

From your perspective, what are some key traits that the most effective board members possess?

Being a good listener! It takes strong communications to be an effective leader in the boardroom. Patience! Remember it’s noses in, hands out. EQ! Showing empathy, but also balancing with being a strong leader.

If you could instantly become an expert in any skill or subject, what would it be?

AI, because it’s moving so quickly and may be the next area with greatest impact on most companies.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?

Speak up for yourself and ask for help from those in your network!

What's the most interesting or unusual job you've ever had?

My parents owned a dry cleaning and laundry business. My first “job” when I was 5 years old was “making hangers”, i.e., putting the paper wrapper on a wire hanger.

If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be and why?

Queen Elizabeth II. She passed away recently and was much admired for the long life she led in serving her country. It would be great to hear her perspectives on being a strong female leader.

What's your favorite way to relax and unwind?

Since the pandemic, I started walking (mostly in the mornings). Most days I walk at least 6 miles and some days it has been 8-10 miles. Typically, I walk by myself because I’m such a fast walker. It’s a great way for me to relax and think!
