If you could give yourself advice on your first day as a board member, what would it be?
Thoroughly research and understand the industry/ market. Know who the competitors are and your company's relative position. Spend time with each of the key personnel - especially the CEO. If there are other board members already in place, spend some time with them, as well to better understand the company history, issues, opportunities, staff, etc.
What's the most memorable trip you've ever taken?
My wife and I traveled to Europe in 2018 and spent about a week in Italy. The sites along the Amalfi Coast and in Rome were beautiful and the historical sites were very impressive and memorable.
From your perspective, what are some key traits that the most effective board members possess?
Good listening skills, collegial with others but not afraid to speak up or disagree, spend time reading company reports in addition to the board meeting decks, staying current on board issues such as cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence.
If you could instantly become an expert in any skill or subject, what would it be?
Artificial Intelligence
What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
Remember your mistakes and failures, but learn from them - don't let them defeat you or prevent you from taking risks in the future.
What's the most interesting or unusual job you've ever had?
As a teenager in high school, I worked in a factory that made cheese.
If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be and why?
Abraham Lincoln - I'd like to visit with him about the issues he had to deal with before, during, and after the civil war, and get more of his thoughts on civil rights and the best way to deal with and eliminate prejudice and unfair treatment of people base on race, religion, sex or country of birth.
What's your favorite way to relax and unwind?
Enjoying a glass of wine at sunset looking at the lake from our back porch.
