Andrea Hagelgans is the U.S. lead and managing director overseeing social issues engagement. With less than half of executives describing their companies as ready to respond to any kind of activism, Andrea works with the C-Suite and clients to help companies and organizations understand and manage the risks of action or inaction on societal issues. She specializes in gender equity discussions and her clients have included Pivotal Ventures, Women Deliver, and Planned Parenthood, among others. In her role, Andrea created and led the U.S.- wide SCOTUS taskforce to help Edelman clients prepare for and respond to the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. She has counseled over 100 companies on complex social issues like abortion, guns, voting and LGBTQ+ rights. She is a published author in Harvard Business Review (Roe v Wade’s Demise is a Turning Point for Corporate America) She was appointed by former Mayor Bill de Blasio to be a Commissioner on the Commission on Gender Equity and sits on the boards of Coro NY and Rewire News Group. She has been named to City & State Political PR Power 50 for the last three years. Andrea recently served as the highest-ranking communications professional andone of the highestranking women in Mayor de Blasio’s administration. As senior advisor for strategic planning, Andrea reported directly to the Mayor and oversaw all communications for the office. She was responsible for crafting the architecture of key mayoral policy initiatives and communications strategies and was one of the drivers of the City’s decision to offer paid parental leave and 3-K for All, an expansion of high-quality, free early childhood education. Before joining the de Blasio administration, Andrea worked as a communications consultant and her clients included the Ford Foundation, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health and National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, among others. She also served as an in-house senior strategist for Planned Parenthood Federation of America and its affiliates, where she led the organization’s communications and donor response to the Komen Foundation’s attempts to defund the organization. This work won industry awards for Crisis and Non-profit Campaigns and was given an Honorable Mention for Campaign of the Year by PRWeek. It is a featured case study in MBA textbooks and taught in programs around the country.
