For a limited period of time, Corporate Directors who meet the following criteria may choose to grandfather into the Certificate of Director Education without attending Director Professionalism. The Institute does suggest, however, that even qualified applicants attend Director Professionalism unless you have recently completed at least 16 hours of continuing director education through an approved provider.

Grandfather criteria:

You are a corporate director who has completed at least three (3) consecutive years of service on a public company board and can demonstrate participation in governance education since January 2004.

  • If you DO you meet this criteria: you qualify to grandfather for the Certificate and may obtain it simply by submitting the Grandfather Application and signing the Code of Conduct. Application fee applies.

    Download the Grandfather Application.

  • If you do NOT meet this criteria: the Institute suggests that you attend Director Professionalism, the 2-day Certificate Course. However, if you still believe that you have the requisite corporate board experience to bypass the entry curriculum, you may submit a complete Exceptions Application to NACD.

    Proceed to Exceptions Process.
